| THIS CHAPTER of 30 Meccan verses was revealed after he Mount 52 and before Reality 69. The next two Parts of the Qur)in (xxix and xxx) are Meccan again, except for the short chapter called [Divine] Support 110, and they comprise two-score lyric gems. The present chapter gives us a picture of how the Universe was formed, as well as another of the final Blaze which will mark the end of the world (I). The title Al-Mulk gives some difficulty in translation from the Arabic. In a so-called republican or pseudo-democratic age, I prefer the word 'control' instead of monarchical terms such as 'dominion' or 'sovereignty, since control here refers to the ultimate power of the Divinity, while actual political power was being slowly forged in Arabia through a confederation of Arab tribes, the Islamic commonwealth or Umma which the Prophet tried to achieve. 'Control' also gives us an easier verb form to use. God is here addressed as the Mercy-giving or ar-Rahman. PART TWENTY-NINE In the name of God, the Mercy-giving, the Merciful! | Tabāraka Al-Ladhī Biyadihi Al-Mulku Wa Huwa `Alá Kulli Shay'in Qadīrun | 067-001* Blessed is He in Whose hands there rests control; He is Capable of [doing] everything, | تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء ٍ قَدِير ٌ |
| Al-Ladhī Khalaqa Al-Mawta Wa Al-Ĥayāata Liyabluwakum 'Ayyukum 'Aĥsanu `Amalāan ۚ Wa Huwa Al-`Azīzu Al-Ghafūru | 067-002* the One Who created death and life, so He may test which of you is finest in action. He is the Powerful, the Forgiving, | الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا ً ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ |
| Al-Ladhī Khalaqa Sab`a Samāwātin Ţibāqāan ۖ Mā Tará Fī Khalqi Ar-Raĥmāni Min Tafāwutin ۖ Fārji`i Al-Başara Hal Tará Min Fuţūrin | 067-003* Who created seven matching heavens. You do not see any discrepancy in the Mercy-giving's creation. Look once again; do you see any flaws? The Blaze | الَّذِي خَلَقَ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ طِبَاقا ً ۖ مَا تَرَى فِي خَلْقِ الرَّحْمَنِ مِنْ تَفَاوُتٍ ۖ فَارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ هَلْ تَرَى مِنْ فُطُورٍ |
| Thumma Arji`i Al-Başara Karratayni Yanqalib 'Ilayka Al-Başaru Khāsi'āan Wa Huwa Ĥasīrun | 067-004* Then look still another time: (your) gaze will come back to you bewildered, and feel exhausted. | ثُمَّ ارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ كَرَّتَيْنِ يَنقَلِبْ إِلَيْكَ الْبَصَرُ خَاسِئا ً وَهُوَ حَسِير ٌ |
| Wa Laqad Zayyannā As-Samā'a Ad-Dunyā Bimaşābīĥa Wa Ja`alnāhā Rujūmāan Lilshshayāţīni ۖ Wa 'A`tadnā Lahum `Adhāba As-Sa`īri | 067-005* We have decorated the nearest sky with lamps. We have placed them as missiles directed towards the devils and prepared torment from the Blaze for them. | وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُوما ً لِلشَّيَاطِينِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ السَّعِيرِ |
| Wa Lilladhīna Kafarū Birabbihim `Adhābu Jahannama ۖ Wa Bi'sa Al-Maşīru | 067-006* Those who disbelieve in their Lord will have Hell's torment; it is such a wretched goal! | وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ |
| 'Idhā 'Ulqū Fīhā Sami`ū Lahā Shahīqāan Wa Hiya Tafūru | 067-007* As they are flung into it, they will hear it gasping as it seethes, | إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقا ً وَهِيَ تَفُورُ |
| Takādu Tamayyazu Mina Al-Ghayži ۖ Kullamā 'Ulqiya Fīhā Fawjun Sa'alahum Khazanatuhā 'Alam Ya'tikum Nadhīrun | 067-008* almost bursting with rage. Do not obey rejectorsEach time a group is cast into it, its keepers will ask them: "Did no warner come to you?" | تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ ۖ كُلَّمَا أُلْقِيَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ |
| Qālū Balá Qad Jā'anā Nadhīrun Fakadhdhabnā Wa Qulnā Mā Nazzala Al-Lahu Min Shay'in 'In 'Antum 'Illā Fī Đalālin Kabīrin | 067-009* They will say: "Of course a warner came to us, and we rejected [him] and said: ' God has not sent down anything; you (all) are merely in gross error."' | قَالُوا بَلَى قَدْ جَاءَنَا نَذِير ٌ فَكَذَّبْنَا وَقُلْنَا مَا نَزَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ شَيْء ٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلاَّ فِي ضَلاَل ٍ كَبِير ٍ |
| Wa Qālū Law Kunnā Nasma`u 'Aw Na`qilu Mā Kunnā Fī 'Aşĥābi As-Sa`īri | 067-010* They will further say: "If we had only listened and reasoned things out, we would not have become inmates of the Blaze." | وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ |
| Fā`tarafū Bidhanbihim Fasuĥqāan Li'şĥābi As-Sa`īri | 067-011* They will acknowledge their offence, so away with the inmates of the Blaze! | فَاعْتَرَفُوا بِذَنْبِهِمْ فَسُحْقا ً لِأصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ |
| 'Inna Al-Ladhīna Yakhshawna Rabbahum Bil-Ghaybi Lahum Maghfiratun Wa 'Ajrun Kabīrun | 067-012* The ones who live in awe of their Lord even though [He is] Unseen will have forgiveness and a large payment. | إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْر ٌ كَبِير ٌ |
| Wa 'Asirrū Qawlakum 'Aw Ajharū Bihi ۖ 'Innahu `Alīmun Bidhāti Aş-Şudūri | 067-013* Hide anything you say or else shout it out: He is still Aware of whatever is on your minds. | وَأَسِرُّوا قَوْلَكُمْ أَوْ اجْهَرُوا بِهِ ۖ إِنَّه ُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ |
| 'Alā Ya`lamu Man Khalaqa Wa Huwa Al-Laţīfu Al-Khabīru | 067-014* Does He not know anyone He has created? He is the Gracious, the Informed! (ii) | أَلاَ يَعْلَمُ مَنْ خَلَقَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ |
| Huwa Al-Ladhī Ja`ala Lakumu Al-'Arđa Dhalūlāan Fāmshū Fī Manākibihā Wa Kulū Min Rizqihi ۖ Wa 'Ilayhi An-Nushūru | 067-015* He is the One Who has placed the earth to be developed by you, so walk along its byways and eat some of what He provides you with, for with Him lies reviving it again. | هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَرْضَ ذَلُولا ً فَامْشُوا فِي مَنَاكِبِهَا وَكُلُوا مِنْ رِزْقِه ِِ ۖ وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ |
| 'A'amintum Man Fī As-Samā'i 'An Yakhsifa Bikumu Al-'Arđa Fa'idhā Hiya Tamūru | 067-016* Do you feel confident that Whoever is in Heaven will not let the earth swallow you up? How it will sway! | أَأَمِنتُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ أَنْ يَخْسِفَ بِكُمُ الأَرْضَ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَمُورُ |
| 'Am 'Amintum Man Fī As-Samā'i 'An Yursila `Alaykum Ĥāşibāan ۖ Fasata`lamūna Kayfa Nadhīri | 067-017* Or do you feel secure that Whoever is in Heaven will not send a hailstorm against you, so that you shall find out how [true] My waming was? | أَمْ أَمِنتُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ أَنْ يُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ حَاصِبا ً ۖ فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ كَيْفَ نَذِيرِ |
| Wa Laqad Kadhdhaba Al-Ladhīna Min Qablihim Fakayfa Kāna Nakīri | 067-018* Their predecessors denied it, and how [great] was My disgust! | وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَكِيرِ |
| 'Awalam Yaraw 'Ilá Aţ-Ţayri Fawqahum Şāffātin Wa Yaqbiđna ۚ Mā Yumsikuhunna 'Illā Ar-Raĥmānu ۚ 'Innahu Bikulli Shay'in Başīrun | 067-019* Have they not watched the birds flapping [their wings] in rows above them? What holds them up except the Mercy-giving? He is Observant of everything. | أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى الطَّيْرِ فَوْقَهُمْ صَافَّاتٍ وَيَقْبِضْنَ ۚ مَا يُمْسِكُهُنَّ إِلاَّ الرَّحْمَنُ ۚ إِنَّه ُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ بَصِيرٌ |
| 'Amman Hādhā Al-Ladhī Huwa Jundun Lakum Yanşurukum Min Dūni Ar-Raĥmāni ۚ 'Ini Al-Kāfirūna 'Illā Fī Ghurūrin | 067-020* Who is there [to act] as an army for you in order to support you, besides the Mercy-giving? Disbelievers are merely suffering from delusion. | أَمَّنْ هَذَا الَّذِي هُوَ جُندٌ لَكُمْ يَنصُرُكُمْ مِنْ دُونِ الرَّحْمَنِ ۚ إِنِ الْكَافِرُونَ إِلاَّ فِي غُرُورٍ |
| 'Amman Hādhā Al-Ladhī Yarzuqukum 'In 'Amsaka Rizqahu ۚ Bal Lajjū Fī `Utūwin Wa Nufūrin | 067-021* Who is there to provide for you if He should stop providing [for you]? Rather they persist in insolence and disdain. | أَمَّنْ هَذَا الَّذِي يَرْزُقُكُمْ إِنْ أَمْسَكَ رِزْقَه ُ ۚ بَلْ لَجُّوا فِي عُتُوٍّ وَنُفُورٍ |
| 'Afaman Yamshī Mukibbāan `Alá Wajhihi 'Ahdá 'Amman Yamshī Sawīyāan `Alá Şirāţin Mustaqīmin | 067-022* And is someone who walks along with his face bent down better guided than someone who walks properly along a Straight Road? God | أَفَمَنْ يَمْشِي مُكِبّا ً عَلَى وَجْهِهِ أَهْدَى أَمَّنْ يَمْشِي سَوِيّا ً عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيم ٍ |
| Qul Huwa Al-Ladhī 'Ansha'akum Wa Ja`ala Lakumu As-Sam`a Wa Al-'Abşāra Wa Al-'Af'idata ۖ Qalīlāan Mā Tashkurūna | 067-023* SAY: "He is the One Who has produced you and granted you hearing, eyesight and vital organs. Yet how seldom are you grateful! | قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِي أَنشَأَكُمْ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالأَبْصَارَ وَالأَفْئِدَةَ ۖ قَلِيلا ً مَا تَشْكُرُونَ |
| Qul Huwa Al-Ladhī Dhara'akum Fī Al-'Arđi Wa 'Ilayhi Tuĥsharūna | 067-024* SAY: "He is the One Who has scattered you all over the earth, and to Him will you be summoned." | قُلْ هُوَ الَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي الأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ |
| Wa Yaqūlūna Matá Hādhā Al-Wa`du 'In Kuntum Şādiqīna | 067-025* They say: "When will this promise [come to be] if you are so truthful?" | وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ |
| Qul 'Innamā Al-`Ilmu `Inda Al-Lahi Wa 'Innamā 'Anā Nadhīrun Mubīnun | 067-026* SAY: "Knowledge rests only with God; I am merely a plain warner." Doomsday | قُلْ إِنَّمَا الْعِلْمُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَا أَنَا نَذِيرٌ مُبِين ٌ |
| Falammā Ra'awhu Zulfatan Sī'at Wujūhu Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Wa Qīla Hādhā Al-Ladhī Kuntum Bihi Tadda`ūna | 067-027* Yet when they see it close at hand, the faces of those who disbelieve will look wretched and someone will say: "This is what you were appealing for!" | فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ زُلْفَة ً سِيئَتْ وُجُوهُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَقِيلَ هَذَا الَّذِي كُنتُمْ بِه ِِ تَدَّعُونَ |
| Qul 'Ara'aytum 'In 'Ahlakaniya Al-Lahu Wa Man Ma`ī 'Aw Raĥimanā Faman Yujīru Al-Kāfirīna Min `Adhābin 'Alīmin | 067-028* SAY: "Have you (all) considered whether God will wipe me out, as well as anyone who is with me, or whether He will show us mercy? Still who will shelter disbelievers from painful torment?" | قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَهْلَكَنِيَ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ مَعِي أَوْ رَحِمَنَا فَمَنْ يُجِيرُ الْكَافِرِينَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيم ٍ |
| Qul Huwa Ar-Raĥmānu 'Āmannā Bihi Wa `Alayhi Tawakkalnā ۖ Fasata`lamūna Man Huwa Fī Đalālin Mubīnin | 067-029* SAY: "It will be the Mercy-giving. We believe in Him and on Him do we rely. You will know anyone who is in plain error." | قُلْ هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ آمَنَّا بِه ِِ وَعَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا ۖ فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ هُوَ فِي ضَلاَلٍ مُبِينٍ |
| Qul 'Ara'aytum 'In 'Aşbaĥa Mā'uukum Ghawrāan Faman Ya'tīkum Bimā'in Ma`īnin | 067-030* SAY: "Have you considered who, if your water should sink into the ground, wifl bring you any water from a spring?" | قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ أَصْبَحَ مَاؤُكُمْ غَوْرا ً فَمَنْ يَأْتِيكُمْ بِمَاءٍ مَعِين ٍ |
