| THIS CHAPTER like the previous one on Friday 62 contains II verses from Madina. It was revealed after Pilgrimage 22 and before The Pleading Woman 58. This places it following the battle of Uhud which occurred near Madina in the third year of the Hijra or 625 A.D. Its description of hypocrisy is very telling. | 'Idhā Jā'aka Al-Munāfiqūna Qālū Nash/hadu 'Innaka Larasūlu Al-Lahi Wa Allāhu Ya`lamu 'Innaka Larasūluhu Wa ۗ Allāhu Yash/hadu 'Inna Al-Munāfiqīna Lakādhibūna | 063-001* Whenever hypocrites come to you, they say: "We admit that you are God's messenger." God already knows that you are His messenger, while God testifies that the hypocrites are liars. | إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ قَالُوا نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُه ُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَكَاذِبُونَ |
| Attakhadhū 'Aymānahum Junnatan Faşaddū `An Sabīli Al-Lahi ۚ 'Innahum Sā'a Mā Kānū Ya`malūna | 063-002* They use their faith as a disguise and obstruct God's way; they are evil because of what they have been doing. | اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّة ً فَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ |
| Dhālika Bi'annahum 'Āmanū Thumma Kafarū Faţubi`a `Alá Qulūbihim Fahum Lā Yafqahūna | 063-003* That is because they have believed, then disbelieved; so their hearts are sealed off and they do not comprehend a thing. | ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا فَطُبِعَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لاَ يَفْقَهُونَ |
| Wa 'Idhā Ra'aytahum Tu`jibuka 'Ajsāmuhum ۖ Wa 'In Yaqūlū Tasma` Liqawlihim ۖ Ka'annahum Khushubun Musannadatun ۖ Yaĥsabūna Kulla Şayĥatin `Alayhim ۚ Humu Al-`Adūwu Fāĥdharhum ۚ Qātalahumu Al-Lahu ۖ 'Anná Yu'ufakūna | 063-004* Whenever you see them, their physical appearance may attract you, while if they speak, you will listen to what they say as if they were just sticks of kindling all stacked up. They reckon every shout is [directed] against them. They are the [real] enemy, so beware of them! May God assail them! How they shrug things off! | وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِنْ يَقُولُوا تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ الْعَدُوُّ فَاحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ |
| Wa 'Idhā Qīla Lahum Ta`ālaw Yastaghfir Lakum Rasūlu Al-Lahi Lawwaw Ru'ūsahum Wa Ra'aytahum Yaşuddūna Wa Hum Mustakbirūna | 063-005* Whenever they are told: "Come, God's messenger will seek forgiveness for you," they twist their heads around and you will see them trying to slip away, while they act so haughty. | وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَوَّوْا رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُمْ مُسْتَكْبِرُونَ |
| Sawā'un `Alayhim 'Āstaghfarta Lahum 'Am Lam Tastaghfir Lahum Lan Yaghfira Al-Lahu Lahum ۚ 'Inna Al-Laha Lā Yahdī Al-Qawma Al-Fāsiqīna | 063-006* It is the same for them whether you seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them; God will never forgive them! God does not guide such immoral folk. | سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَاسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ |
| Humu Al-Ladhīna Yaqūlūna Lā Tunfiqū `Alá Man `Inda Rasūli Al-Lahi Ĥattá Yanfađđū ۗ Wa Lillahi Khazā'inu As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđi Wa Lakinna Al-Munāfiqīna Lā Yafqahūna | 063-007* They are the ones who say: "Do not spend anything on anyone who is with God's messenger until they desert [him]." God holds the treasures of Heaven and Earth, yet hypocrites do not comprehend this. | هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لاَ تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَائِنُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لاَ يَفْقَهُونَ |
| Yaqūlūna La'in Raja`nā 'Ilá Al-Madīnati Layukhrijanna Al-'A`azzu Minhā Al-'Adhalla ۚ Wa Lillahi Al-`Izzatu Wa Lirasūlihi Wa Lilmu'uminīna Wa Lakinna Al-Munāfiqīna Lā Ya`lamūna | 063-008* They say: "If we should ever return to the City, the grandees there would expel the lower [classes]." Yet influence belongs to God, His messenger and believers, even though hypocrites do not realize it. On Paying Taxes (ii) | يَقُولُونَ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الأَذَلَّ ۚ وَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِه ِِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ |
| Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Lā Tulhikum 'Amwālukum Wa Lā 'Awlādukum `An Dhikri Al-Lahi ۚ Wa Man Yaf`al Dhālika Fa'ūlā'ika Humu Al-Khāsirūna | 063-009* You who believe, let neither your wealth nor your children distract you from remembering God. Those who do so will be the losers. | يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لاَ تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَلاَ أَوْلاَدُكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَمَنْ ۚ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ فَأُوْلَائِكَ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ |
| Wa 'Anfiqū Min Mā Razaqnākum Min Qabli 'An Ya'tiya 'Aĥadakumu Al-Mawtu Fayaqūla Rabbi Lawlā 'Akhkhartanī 'Ilá 'Ajalin Qarībin Fa'aşşaddaqa Wa 'Akun Mina Aş-Şāliĥīna | 063-010* Spend something from whatever We have provided you with before death comes to one of you and he says: "My Lord, if You would only delay things for me for a short while, then I will act charitably and become honorable!" Eleventh Hour Repentance | وَأَنْفِقُوا مِنْ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ أَحَدَكُمُ الْمَوْتُ فَيَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوْلاَ أَخَّرْتَنِي إِلَى أَجَل ٍ قَرِيب ٍ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُنْ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ |
| Wa Lan Yu'uakhkhira Al-Lahu Nafsāan 'Idhā Jā'a 'Ajaluhā Wa ۚ Allāhu Khabīrun Bimā Ta`malūna | 063-011* God will never postpone things for any soul once its deadline has arrived. God is Informed about anything you do! | وَلَنْ يُؤَخِّرَ اللَّهُ نَفْسا ً إِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهَا ۚ وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ |
